Ricarda Merbeth makes her Tiroler Festspiele Erl debut as Kundry in “Parsifal”, in a new production by Philipp M. Krenn under the musical direction of Asher Fisch. She joins a stellar cast including Michael Nagy (Amfortas), Falk Struckmann (Titurel), René Pape (Gurnemanz), Jamez McCorkle (Parsifal), and Audun Iversen (Klingsor) in the other leading roles.
Performances take place on April 2 and 5, 2026.
One of the most acclaimed Wagnerian sopranos of our time, Merbeth added the role of Kundry to her repertoire for concert performances with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023.
Richard Wagner’s stage-consecration festival play Parsifal has had a remarkable and eventful performance history: once dismissed by Nietzsche for its almost hypnotic musical power and consigned to the proverbial “poison cabinet,” and later restricted by Cosima Wagner through performance bans outside Bayreuth, the work is fortunately now freely accessible—and can be experienced here at the Wilder Kaiser in a production of exceptional caliber.
Philipp M. Krenn’s acclaimed staging returns, this time with a renewed vocal brilliance: American tenor Jamez McCorkle makes his Austrian debut in the title role, alongside Ricarda Merbeth, one of the leading voices in the Wagner repertoire, who will also be heard in Erl for the first time. At the conductor’s podium, as in 2025, is Asher Fisch, bringing decades of Wagnerian expertise to the score.
