This evening, Etienne Dupuis steps in at short notice as Escamillo in Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the Wiener Staatsoper.

The unexpected engagement comes less than two weeks after his final performance in the title role of Verdi’s Macbeth at the same house on October 4, marking a striking contrast between two very different characters: the tormented, power-hungry Scottish king and Bizet’s confident, charismatic toreador.

Henrik Nánási conducts Calixto Bieito’s production, with Stéphanie d’Oustrac as Carmen, Roberto Alagna as Don José, and Anna Bondarenko as Micaëla.
