DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER | GEORGE GAGNIDZE | PALMA DE MALLORCA

On February 18 and 20, 2026, George Gagnidze sings the title role in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer at the Teatro Principal de Palma. The production, staged by Marcelo Lombardero and conducted by Guillermo García-Calvo, marks a milestone as the first Wagner opera ever presented on that Balearic island. The Georgian baritone first debuted the role of the cursed Dutchman earlier in his career in Osnabrück, and most recently returned to it last summer in a new production at the Oper im Steinbruch, in Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland. More information about George Gagnidze: https://www.operabase.com/george-gagnidze-a6056/de https://georgegagnidze.com/ https://www.instagram.com/georgegagnidze/?hl=de About the Production: Der fliegende Holländer ranks among Richard Wagner’s most significant operas, for which he also wrote the libretto. Created between 1840 and 1841, the work marks an important milestone in the composer’s development, signaling his artistic maturation and a shift toward the philosophical and poetic themes that would later define his operatic style. The opera follows a sacrilegious sailor condemned to wander the seas forever. Only once every seven years is he permitted to go ashore, where he searches for a woman whose faithful love might redeem him and break the curse. The opera was first performed on January 2, 1843, at the Königlich Sächsisches Hoftheater in Dresden. During the 2001 opera season, a concert performance was presented at the Auditorium de Palma while the Teatre Principal was undergoing renovations. Soprano Gabriela Scherer had originally been scheduled to sing the role of Senta but was forced to withdraw due to illness; she was replaced by Iwona Sobotka.
