GEORGE GAGNIDZE | NABUCCO | RIGA

On June 19, 2025, George Gagnidze returns to one of his signature roles—Verdi’s tormented Babylonian king—for a special one-night-only performance of Nabucco at the Latvian National Opera in Riga. The production, staged by Guntis Gailītis and conducted by Mārtiņš Ozoliņš, features a distinguished cast including Liudmyla Monastyrska as Abigaille, Edgars Ošleja as Zaccaria, Raimonds Bramanis as Ismaele, Irma Pavāre as Fenena, Artem Safronov as Abdallo, Evija Martinsone as Anna, and Krišjānis Norvelis as the High Priest of Baal.
A defining role in his career, Nabucco has seen the Georgian baritone take center stage in many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, the Chorégies d’Orange, and the Arena di Verona.
The following evening, he will join a star-studded Opera Gala alongside Vida Miknevičiūtė, Liparit Avetisyan, Liudmyla Monastyrska, Zanda Švēde, and Irakli Kakhidze, under the baton of Maestro Ozoliņš.

About the Production:

can say with a certainty that this opera marked the beginning of my career as a composer -said Giuseppe Verdi. In 1840, after the death of both children and his wife, Giuseppe Verdi is stricken by a deep depression. Only after two years – in 1842, the composer overcomes his crises, settles down to work and writes Nabucco. The resounding triumph after the performance of Nabucco opened the era of glory for Giuseppe Verdi’s operas.

The LNO stage version of Nabucco is based on the concept of time. The theme of time can be traced also in the visual interpretation of the production- it is the course of the sun, the course of human life and, above all, the judgement of the Supreme Power of our thoughts and deeds.
