IOLANTA | SONYA YONCHEVA | VIENNA

Just weeks after her highly successful Tosca, Sonya Yoncheva returns to the Wiener Staatsoper in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s final opera Iolanta, in a production by Evgeny Titov and under the musical direction of Tugan Sokhiev. She will share the stage with Ivo Stanchev as King René, Dmitro Popov as Vaudemont, Boris Pinkhasovich as Robert, Attila Mokus as Ibn-Hakia, Daniel Jenz as Almerik, and Monika Bohinec as Marta. The premiere is on March 24, with additional performances on March 27, 31, April 4, and 6, 2025.

The Bulgarian soprano is not new to the role of the Provençal blind princess, having sung it in several prestigious festivals and opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera New York and the Baden-Baden Festival. The New York Times thus described her Paris Opera performances: “Her voice is clear and focused, yet with a vibration of youthful feeling at its core. It manages to be both bright and gentle, with a penetrating, fearless upper register”

About the Production:

Iolanta, the blind daughter of the Provençal King René, has been hidden away in the Vosges Mountains since birth. Her father hopes for a cure through the famous doctor Ibn-Hakia – only when she can see will Iolanta be allowed to meet her fiancé, Robert of Burgundy. However, things take a different turn: Robert wants to break off the engagement because he has fallen in love with another princess. His companion and friend, Vaudemont, falls in love with Iolanta at first sight, and she returns his love. Love becomes the key to her treatment, and the cure succeeds – Iolanta learns to see.
