Andrea Sanguineti conducts La fanciulla del West at the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, in a new production by Dirk Schmeding, starring Ilaria Alida Quilico as Minnie, Jorge Puerta as Dick Johnson, and Massimo Cavalletti as Jack Rance in the three leading roles.
Performances take place on March 28, April 19, May 14, June 20, and July 8, 12, and 18.
Andrea Sanguineti has been Music Director of the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2023/24 season.
With the start of the 2023/2024 season, Andrea Sanguineti became General Music Director of the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra. A conductor of charisma and strong musicality, Sanguineti has been a sought-after guest with many leading European orchestras and opera houses since his debut in 2008 at the podium of the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover, where he has conducted numerous new productions, revivals, and concerts.
His current season includes new productions of Macbeth at the Aalto Theater Essen, I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Hanover, Norma in Strasbourg, and Die lustige Witwe in Cologne, as well as revivals such as Tosca, Aida, Tristan und Isolde, and Così fan tutte in Essen.
During the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, Sanguineti conducted productions including Roberto Devereux at the Sydney Opera House, Maria Stuarda at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Stiffelio at the Opéra National du Rhin, La Cenerentola at Oper Leipzig, Don Carlo at the Aalto Theater Essen, and Lucia di Lammermoor at Oper Zürich. He also led concert series with the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Munich Symphony Orchestra.
His wide-ranging repertoire spans operetta such as Die Fledermaus, Italian opera from Rossini to Puccini, German music drama by Richard Wagner, French repertoire, and contemporary music theatre. In the concert hall, his programs range from symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms to works by Messiaen and Scriabin, as well as Tan Dun’s avant-garde Concerto for Orchestra “Marco Polo.” He has collaborated with numerous renowned artists, including Maria Agresta, Annette Dasch, Bryan Hymel, Michael Spyres, Quinn Kelsey, Lucio Gallo, Franco Farina, Fabio Armiliato, and Alexander Vinogradov.
Until the end of the 2018 season, the Italian maestro served as General Music Director of the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie and Theater Görlitz, where during his highly successful five-year tenure he conducted numerous premieres and more than 150 concerts in Saxony. Prior to that, he was engaged as First Kapellmeister and Deputy General Music Director at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg.
Andrea Sanguineti studied piano and composition at the Conservatory in Genoa and conducting at the University of Music in Vienna as well as at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. There, he earned his diploma in orchestral conducting at the age of just 23, making him one of the youngest graduates in his field. Shortly thereafter, he was engaged as a répétiteur at the Opéra National du Rhin.
