LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES | HULKAR SABIROVA | BERLIN

Just days after her final Aida performance, Hulkar Sabirova returns to the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin on May 18, taking on the role of Hélène in Les vêpres siciliennes. Under the baton of Dominic Limburg, she will be joined by Valentyn Dytiuk as Henri, Dong-Hwan Lee as Montfort, and Roberto Tagliavini as Jean de Procida, among others. Additional performances are scheduled for May 24 and 28.

Hélène was the role that solidified Sabirova’s standing as a true Verdi soprano when she made her debut in this very Olivier Py production at the Deutsche Oper to widespread critical acclaim in 2022.

About the production:

This reference also forms the basis for the staging by French director Olivier Py, who has already demonstrated his sensitivity to the way grand opera engages with political themes at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, notably with Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète. The French occupation of Algeria from Verdi’s time to the 1950s serves as the backdrop for his telling of this story, in which Verdi, following La Traviata and Rigoletto, expands the focus of his music dramas: Not just the fate of the individual, but also their relationship to the well-being of entire nations is at the heart of Les vêpres siciliennes. Unconditional hatred, the will to reconcile, and the conflict between these extremes drive the actions of the main characters, as well as those of the occupiers and the oppressed. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, this work, which has long been overshadowed by Verdi’s other major operas, will be performed not in the long-standing Italian adaptation, but in the original French version from 1855.
