After two highly successful concerts in Bologna in past years, Pietari Inkinen returns to lead the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale at the Teatro Manzoni of that city. A long-time champion of his fellow countryman Jean Sibelius, the Finnish maestro will conduct his Symphony No. 5 in E flat Major, Op. 62, and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, op. 47.

Pietari Inkinen has recorded the complete opus of Sibelius’s symphonies with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, released by the Naxos label.

About the Production:

**Jean Sibelius**
*Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82*

Bologna’s Teatro Comunale was the first venue in Italy to showcase Sibelius’s music, with Arturo Toscanini conducting in 1904. Commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate Sibelius’s 50th anniversary, the Fifth Symphony took seven years to complete. Its famous “swan theme,” inspired by the composer’s vision of swans flying over his home, earned the work the nickname “Swan Symphony.”

**Dmitri Shostakovich**
*Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47*

Composed in 1937 during Stalin’s purges, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was a response to criticism from the Soviet regime. Although it was praised by authorities, it subtly concealed a message of suffering and protest, a fact Shostakovich later revealed.

The Teatro Comunale’s orchestra, led by Michele Mariotti, has worked with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti and Daniel Oren. It frequently tours internationally and has recorded numerous prestigious productions. Recently, it has collaborated with major festivals, including the Verdi Festival in Parma and the Rossini Opera Festival.
