Magdalena Anna Hofmann makes her role debut as Marie in Wozzeck at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, in a new production directed by Johan Simons and conducted by Alejo Pérez. She joins a cast led by Robin Adams in the title role, alongside James Kryshak (Hauptmann), Martin Winkler (Doktor), Samuel Sakker (Andres), and Lotte Verstaen (Margret). Performances take place in Antwerp on June 1, 3, 7, 10, and 12, and in Ghent on June 21, 24, 27, and 29.
The Polish-born soprano adds this major role to an already dynamic season, which recently saw her acclaimed portrayal of Isolde at the Staatstheater Darmstadt.

When the German writer Georg Büchner dies in 1837 at the age of 23, he leaves behind an unfinished masterpiece with Woyzeck. His fragmentary play is not performed on stage until 1913. A year later, the young composer Alban Berg sees a production and is immediately convinced that Büchner’s revolutionary work must become the basis for his very first opera. The result: one of the most groundbreaking and moving scores in the operatic repertoire.
The internationally acclaimed Johan Simons, who directed Verdi’s Don Carlos at our house a few seasons ago, has already adapted Büchner’s play three times and now ventures for the first time into Berg’s operatic adaptation. The music inspires him to fully immerse himself in the mind of Wozzeck, a destitute man at the bottom of the social ladder. On top of that, the exploited Wozzeck suffers from hallucinations that no one understands – an unbearable and dangerous situation that can only end in tragedy.
