SONYA YONCHEVA MAKES HER DEBUT AS MÉDÉE IN BERLIN

October 07, 2018

On October 7, 2018 Sonya Yoncheva will debut the title role of Cherubini’s Médée at the Berlin State Opera, in a new production by Andrea Berth and under the musical direction of Maestro Daniel Barenboin, the first of a series of six performances running through October 28, 2018. She will share the stage with Charles Castronovo as Jason, Iain Paterson as Créon, Elsa Dreisig as Dircé and Marina Prudenskaya as Néris.

Sonya Yoncheva is returning to the Berlin State Opera, where she last appeared as Mimì in La bohème and Violetta in La traviata, a portrayal which prompted Die Welt to proclaim "She is the finest Violetta since Maria Callas. The Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is possibly the best Traviata in the world at present.”

Médée is Sonya's fifth role debut in 12 months. The Bulgarian soprano recently made her acclaimed debuts as Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos at the Paris Opera, as Tosca and Luisa Miller at the Metropolita Opera and as Imogene in Il pirata at the Teatro alla Scala. After this Médée she will return to the Berlin State Opera in June 2019 in the title role of Tosca.
