George Gagnidze to return to the Metropolitan Opera as Amonasro in Aida

March 23, 2017

On March 23, George Gagnidze will return to the Metropolitan Opera as Amonasro in Aida, in the historical Sonja Frisell production conducted by Daniele Rustioni. Krassimira Stoyanova will sing the title role, Violeta Urmana will be Amneris, Jorge de Leon and Riccardo Massi will share the role of Radames, and James Morris will sing Ramfis. This will be the first of seven performances running through April 20, 2017.

George Gagnidze is one of today's most acclaimed and requested dramatic baritones, and Amonasro is one of his most frequently performed roles, having recently sung it at the Teatro alla Scala, the Paris Opera, and the San Francisco Opera, among others. This is his third Aida run at the Metropolitan Opera after previous appearances as Amonasro in the 2012/2013 and 2014/2015 season.

Future performances of the Georgian baritone include Carlo Gérard in Andrea Chénier, Scarpia in Tosca and his first Barnaba in La Gioconda at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Tonio in Pagliacci and Scarpia at the Metropolitan Opera, Amonasro in Plácido Domingo's world tour of Aida in Frankfurt and at the Teatro Real of Madrid.
