Sonya Yoncheva, who on this occasion will sing the popular aria “La mamma morta” from Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, made her scenic Teatro alla Scala debut in the 2016/2017 season as Mimì in La bohème, returning one year later as Imogene in a new production of Il pirata and in 2019 for a Rolex Ambassadors Gala with the Wiener Philarmoniker conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and Plácido Domingo. However, she had first graced the Scala stage in a concert performance of Rameau's Les Indes galantes in 2008 and as the winner of Plácido Domingo Operalia Competition in 2010. This past summer, the Bulgarian soprano was scheduled to star as the protagonist of a new production of Fedora, an event canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
