George Gagnidze as Scarpia in Tosca at the Deutsche Oper Berlin

May 28, 2017

On May 28, 2017, George Gagnidze, who has just ended a highly acclaimed run of four performances as Carlo Gérard in Andrea Chénier at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, will appear in the same theater for one performance as Scarpia in a Boleslaw Barlog production of Tosca conducted by Ivan Repusic. Alongside him, Maria José Siri will sing the title role and Alexandrs Antonenko that of Mario Cavaradossi.

“There are two roles that have been important throughout my career”, states the Georgian baritone. “One is Rigoletto, and then Scarpia in Tosca that I've sung for my New York debut at the Avery Fisher hall in 2008 and later in Luc Bondy's new production at the Metropolitan Opera conducted by James Levine, and for the HD cinema broadcast in 2010.” The Puccini villain has brought George Gagnidze to the most prestigious opera companies in the world, including the Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National Paris and the Berlin Staatsoper.

Performances after his appearances in Berlin include the title role of Nabucco in a new production that will inaugurate the 2017 season of the Arena di Verona, his BBC Proms debut as Šakovlity in Hovanščina, Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana and Tonio in Pagliacci at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, Pagliacci at the Metropolitan Opera and Amonasro in Aida at the Teatro Real of Madrid.
