Erika Grimaldi returns to the composer of her stage debut, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, debuting at the Welsh National Opera as the Countess Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, in a Tobias Richter production and under the musical direction of Kerem Hasan. Just three days after her appearances as Iolanta, Sonya Yoncheva brings her much-acclaimed portrayal of Maddalena di Coigny in Andrea Chénier to the Wiener Staatsoper, where earlier in this season she had also received accolades as Tosca. Umberto Giordano's best-known work, staged by Otto Otto Schenk, is conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi. The star-studded cast includes - among others - Michael Fabiano in the title role and Luca Salsi as Gérard. The premiere is on April 8, with two additional shows on April 12, and 15, 2025. The Plovdiv-born soprano debuted the role of the noblewoman Maddalena di Coigny at the Teatro alla Scala in 2023. Pietari Inkinen conducts the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in three concerts on April 3, 4, and 11 at the StudioKonzert Saarsbrücken, Gastkonzert Ludwigsburg, and Sinfoniekonzert Kaiserslautern, respectively. The program, entitled "Wo Waldgeister weben" (Where forest spirits weave), includes Jean Sibelius's mysterious and at times eery symphonic poem "Tapiola", Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky's last work, the menacing and dark Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique", and Sergey Rachmaninov's powerfully virtuoso Piano Concerto No. 4, performed by soloist Alexei Volodin. As a teenager, the Finnish conductor, born in 1980, began studying the violin at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he also attended Jorma Panula's conducting class. Just days after participating in a Wagner Gala at the Teatro Real Madrid, on April 2, 2025, Gabriela Scherer will sing the role of Siegliende in Die Walküre in a concert performance of Wagner's masterpiece at the NCPA Beijing, marking her Chinese debut. Petr Popelka conducts the Wiener Symphoniker, and Ric Furmands and Liang Li co-star as Siegmund and Hunding, respectively. The concert includes ballet music from three Verdi operas, Macbeth, Aida, and Don Carlos. On March 29, 2025, Gabriela Scherer makes her Teatro Real Madrid debut, co-starring with baritone Michael Volle in a Wagner Gala concert devoted to Richard Wagner’s music, with Gustavo Gimeno leading the Orchestra of the Teatro Real. The two opera stars will perform Scenes from Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser and Tristan und Isolde. The Swiss-born soprano has made a name for herself as one of the foremost interpreters of Wagner’s masterpieces, and particularly as Senta in Der fliegende Holländer.
