Sonya Yoncheva brings her celebrated portrayal of Maddalena di Coigny in Andrea Chénier to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, in a production by Nicolas Joël conducted by Daniele Rustioni. She joins a stellar cast that includes Piotr Beczała in the title role and Igor Golovatenko as Carlo Gérard. Performances take place on November 24 and 28, and on December 3, 6, 9, and 13, the latter to be broadcast live in HD in cinemas worldwide.
The Plovdiv-born soprano made her role debut at Teatro alla Scala in May 2023 and has since sung Maddalena to great acclaim at other major venues, including the Wiener Staatsoper. Among Giordano’s heroines, she has also starred as Fedora in new productions at La Scala and the Met, and as Stephana in Siberia at Teatro Real Madrid and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Later this season, she will debut as the titular heroine of Marina with I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, marking the first-ever performance of Giordano’s very first opera.
