On February 28, 2026, George Gagnidze returns to his hometown of Tbilisi to perform the roaccle of Tonio in Pagliacci at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre, in a production directed by Federico Grazzini and conducted by Levan Jagaev. He shares the stage with Konstantine Kipiani as Canio, Tinatin Mamulashvili as Nedda, Guram Paatishvili as Beppe, and Giorgi Lomiseli as Silvio.
Tonio is one of George Gagnidze’s signature roles, which he has performed on some of the world’s leading stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Hamburg State Opera.
The Tbilisi Opera is also where he made his stage debut, singing Renato in Un ballo in maschera.

George Gagnidze is a Georgian dramatic baritone known for his powerful interpretations of major operatic roles, particularly in the works of Verdi. He gained international attention when he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the 2008/09 season as Rigoletto. Since then, he has returned to the company for nearly 150 performances, singing roles such as Nabucco, Macbeth, Scarpia in Tosca, Amonasro in Aida, Tonio in Pagliacci, Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana, and Shaklovity in Hovanščina.
Gagnidze regularly performs at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. In the 2024/25 season, he appears again at the Metropolitan Opera as Scarpia, performs Miller in Luisa Miller at the Staatsoper Hamburg, and sings the title role in Rigoletto at the Opéra National de Paris. He also makes house debuts at the Hungarian State Opera, the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, and the Latvian National Opera.
Born in Tbilisi, Gagnidze studied at the local State Conservatory and began his career in 1996. His international breakthrough followed his first-prize win at the Concorso Voci Verdiane in 2005. Over his career, he has collaborated with renowned conductors and appeared at major venues such as Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera, and the Royal Opera House.
