On May 8, conductor Pietari Inkinen will lead the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in a special concert dedicated to combating antisemitism and fostering interfaith dialogue. He will be joined by violinist Viviane Hagner and Benjamin Chait, cantor of the Synagogue Community of Saar. The performance will take place in the Großer Sendesaal of SR in Saarbrücken and will be broadcast live on SR Kultur Radio at 19:30. The evening’s program includes Pavel Haas’ Study for Strings, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, Gideon Klein’s Partita for Strings, and Korngold’s Theme and Variations, Op. 42. A special reading of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s poem Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben, written during his resistance against the Nazi regime, will also be featured. Held in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, the concert pays tribute to artistic resistance and the enduring strength of memory. All proceeds will support Growing4Respect, an interfaith initiative dedicated to building dialogue, understanding, and friendship between Jewish and Muslim youth.

About the Production:

On May 8, eighty years ago, the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht marked the end of World War II in Europe.
The German Radio Philharmonic (DRP), in cooperation with the Saar Synagogue Community, commemorates this day with works by Pavel Haas, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Gideon Klein. Violinist Viviane Hagner will appear as the soloist. The program also includes a recitation by Benjamin Chait, cantor of the Saar Synagogue Community.

The concert program brings together four works that are particularly connected to history and the resistance against forgetting. Pavel Haas’s Study for String Orchestra was composed in Theresienstadt and premiered under inhumane conditions—a powerful testament to artistic creativity in the face of oppression. Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, written in exile, reflects how a displaced artist had to redefine his musical identity. Gideon Klein’s Partita for Strings also survives from the Theresienstadt camp. The concert concludes with Korngold’s Theme and Variations, Op. 42.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the “Growing4respect” project. Co-founded by Chait, this interfaith initiative focuses on Jewish and Muslim children and youth. The project aims to make religious diversity tangible in order to dismantle prejudices at an early stage, promote friendship and understanding between religions, and highlight values such as tolerance, respect, and compassion—central tenets in both faiths.

The concert is held under the patronage of Saarland’s Minister President Anke Rehlinger, who will be represented by Christine Streichert-Clivot, Minister for Education and Culture. Additionally, SR Director General Martin Grasmück and Evgenij Mrinski, Managing Director of the Saar Synagogue Community, will address the audience.
