George Gagnidze - Rigoletto

May 10, 2025

RIGOLETTO | GEORGE GAGNIDZE | PARIS

George Gagnidze returns to one of his signature roles—Rigoletto—at the Opéra National de Paris on May 10, in Claus Guth’s production conducted by Andrea Battistoni. He leads a renowned cast that includes Slávka Zámečníková as Gilda, Dmitry Korchak as the Duke of Mantua, Alexander Tsymbalyuk as Sparafucile, and Justina Gringytė as Maddalena. Gagnidze will appear in nine additional performances on May 14, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30, as well as on June 3, 8, and 12. The Tbilisi-born baritone has earned international acclaim for his powerful portrayal of Verdi’s tormented court jester, a role he has performed more than any other. His interpretation has graced many of the world’s foremost opera stages and festivals, often in new productions—including the Metropolitan Opera (in two different stagings), Teatro alla Scala, Los Angeles Opera, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, to name a few. Parisian audiences have already celebrated him in roles such as Germont in La traviata, Gianciotto in Francesca da Rimini, and Amonasro in Aida. More information about George Gagnidze: https://www.operabase.com/george-gagnidze-a6056/de https://georgegagnidze.com/ https://www.instagram.com/georgegagnidze/?hl=de About the Production: “It’s a magnificent, grandiose subject, featuring one of the most extraordinary characters ever created in the theatre and in the world”. With these words, Verdi asked Francesco Maria Piave to write a libretto inspired by Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse. A paradoxical character, Rigoletto is both a deformed buffoon, serving the Duke of Mantua in his seductive endeavours, and the embodiment of fatherly love for his daughter Gilda. With its wealth of contrasts, the theme of the curse and its unforgettable arias, the opera, premiered at La Fenice in Venice in 1851, became the first of Verdi’s great popular successes alongside Il Trovatore and La Traviata. Claus Guth has conceived his staging as a long flashback in which Rigoletto, wracked with remorse, relives the death of his daughter, to which he unwittingly contributed. Pietari Inkinen - DRP

May 08, 2025

PIETARI INKINEN | DRP | SAARBRÜCKEN

On May 8, conductor Pietari Inkinen will lead the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in a special concert dedicated to combating antisemitism and fostering interfaith dialogue. He will be joined by violinist Viviane Hagner and Benjamin Chait, cantor of the Synagogue Community of Saar. The performance will take place in the Großer Sendesaal of SR in Saarbrücken and will be broadcast live on SR Kultur Radio at 19:30. The evening’s program includes Pavel Haas’ Study for Strings, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, Gideon Klein’s Partita for Strings, and Korngold’s Theme and Variations, Op. 42. A special reading of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s poem Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben, written during his resistance against the Nazi regime, will also be featured. Held in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, the concert pays tribute to artistic resistance and the enduring strength of memory. All proceeds will support Growing4Respect, an interfaith initiative dedicated to building dialogue, understanding, and friendship between Jewish and Muslim youth. [Photo: Kaupo Kikkas] More information about Pietari Inkinen: https://pietariinkinen.com/ https://www.drp-orchester.de/drp/orchester/chefdirigent104.html About the Production: On May 8, eighty years ago, the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht marked the end of World War II in Europe. The German Radio Philharmonic (DRP), in cooperation with the Saar Synagogue Community, commemorates this day with works by Pavel Haas, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Gideon Klein. Violinist Viviane Hagner will appear as the soloist. The program also includes a recitation by Benjamin Chait, cantor of the Saar Synagogue Community. The concert program brings together four works that are particularly connected to history and the resistance against forgetting. Pavel Haas’s Study for String Orchestra was composed in Theresienstadt and premiered under inhumane conditions—a powerful testament to artistic creativity in the face of oppression. Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, written in exile, reflects how a displaced artist had to redefine his musical identity. Gideon Klein’s Partita for Strings also survives from the Theresienstadt camp. The concert concludes with Korngold’s Theme and Variations, Op. 42. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the "Growing4respect" project. Co-founded by Chait, this interfaith initiative focuses on Jewish and Muslim children and youth. The project aims to make religious diversity tangible in order to dismantle prejudices at an early stage, promote friendship and understanding between religions, and highlight values such as tolerance, respect, and compassion—central tenets in both faiths. The concert is held under the patronage of Saarland’s Minister President Anke Rehlinger, who will be represented by Christine Streichert-Clivot, Minister for Education and Culture. Additionally, SR Director General Martin Grasmück and Evgenij Mrinski, Managing Director of the Saar Synagogue Community, will address the audience. Irina Lungu - Norma

April 26, 2025

NORMA | IRINA LUNGU | BERLIN

After receiving accolades for her role debut last January in Bellini’s hometown of Catania, Irina Lungu reprises the role of the Druidic High Priestess on April 26 in Norma at the Staatsoper Berlin. She stars in a new Vasily Barkhatov production conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta, leading a cast that includes Dmitry Korchak as Pollione, Elmina Hasan as Adalgisa, and Riccardo Fassi as Oroveso. There will be an additional performance on April 29. Among the celebratory reviews she received in Catania, one from the prestigious magazine Musica stands out: "The amplitude of her singing, combined with a range that moves with admirable ease from low to high notes—thanks to a sophisticated technique—allows her an interpretation of 'Casta Diva' and the cabaletta that follows, 'Ah! bello a me ritorna,' backed by expressive depth and remarkable security in virtuosic passages.” More information about Irina Lungu: https://www.operabase.com/irina-lungu-a7420/de Instagram Irina Lungu About the Production: The will to resist the Roman occupiers is growing among the Galls, and Norma should finally give the sign for an uprising against the oppressor in the name of the god of war. But she hesitates due to a conflict of conscience: despite her vow of chastity, Norma has two children, hidden from the public, fathered by the Roman Pollione. When she finds out that Pollione loves the novice Adalgisa and wants to run away with her, her situation seems hopeless. If she reveals her double life, she risks not only her own standing, but that of her children as well. Vincenzo Bellini’s opera, which premiered in 1831, is considered the epitome of bel canto, but it offers a great deal more than just “beautiful singing”. Richard Wagner already acknowledged that the amazing dramatic music is a portrait of the protagonist’s soul. In his interpretation, Vasily Barkhatov underscores Norma’s sense of being torn between her public role and her personal feelings against the backdrop of a political revolution.
