SIBELIUS / BARTÓK | PIETARI INKINEN | TOKYO

On November 27, 2025, Pietari Inkinen conducts the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in a program mostly centered on the sound world of Jean Sibelius. The concert opens with Pohjola’s Daughter, op. 49, and The Swan of Tuonela, two tone poems inspired by Nordic mythological tales, rich in atmosphere and evocative orchestral colors. The folksy spirit also pervades Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which will be performed by soloist Piotr Anderszewski. The second part is entirely devoted to Sibelius and his visionary single-movement Symphony No. 7. Pietari Inkinen is a prominent figure in Japan’s musical landscape, thanks to his past tenure as Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. George Gagnidze - CHRISTMAS GALA

November 02, 2025

KHOVANSHCHINA | GEORGE GAGNIDZE | BERLIN

George Gagnidze sings the role of Boyar Shaklovity in Khovanshchina at the Staatsoper Berlin, in a production by Claus Guth under the musical direction of Timur Zangiev. He joins a distinguished cast that includes Mika Kares as Ivan Khovansky, Thomas Atkins as Andrei Khovansky, Stephan Rügamer as Vassily Golitzyn, Taras Shtonda as Dosifey, and Marina Prudenskaya as Marfa. Performances take place on November 2, 9, 15, and 23. The Georgian baritone received rave reviews for his interpretation of Boyar Shaklovity when this production was first unveiled at the Staatsoper Berlin in 2024. He has also performed the role at the Metropolitan Opera and at the BBC Proms. More information about George Gagnidze: https://www.operabase.com/george-gagnidze-a6056/de https://georgegagnidze.com/ https://www.instagram.com/georgegagnidze/?hl=de About the Production: Between 1682 and 1689, Moscow becomes the scene of chaotic political upheaval, culminating in the energetic Tsarevich Peter (later known as Peter the Great) seizing power. Various factions wage brutal battles for the throne: fanatical sectarians known as the “Old Believers,” the Streltsy—the Tsar’s bodyguard—anarchistic lone fighters, and Peter’s loyal supporters. Yet the true protagonist of the opera is the people themselves. In Khovanshchina (“The Khovansky Affair”), Modest Mussorgsky was not concerned with reproducing political events and ruthless power struggles in precise detail. Rather, through a vast collage of historical documents, he sought to portray “the past within the present”—a kind of meditation on history through the medium of opera. Director Claus Guth, interested in sharply defined character portrayals within their respective worlds, stages Mussorgsky’s unfinished stage work, which was later completed through the assisting hands of Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Irina Lungu - Cosi fan tutte

October 17, 2025

COSÌ FAN TUTTE | IRINA LUNGU | ROVIGO, TREVISO, PADOVA

Irina Lungu takes on the role of Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in a production by Stefano Vizioli, conducted by Jordi Bernàcer, which will tour three cities in Veneto. After opening at the Teatro Sociale in Rovigo on October 17 and 19, the production will move to the Teatro Mario Del Monaco in Treviso on November 7 and 9, and conclude at the Teatro Verdi in Padova on November 16. She leads a distinguished cast that includes Francesca Di Sauro as Dorabella, Andrew Kim as Ferrando, Biagio Pizzuti as Guglielmo, Paola Gardina as Despina, and Maurizio Muraro as Don Alfonso. The Russian-born soprano returns to Fiordiligi after a twenty-year hiatus, having sung the role only once, in a single production very early in her career. Regarding the Da Ponte operas, she recently debuted another Mozart heroine, Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, in Liège, and will soon reprise one of her signature roles, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, in Tokyo. More information about Irina Lungu: https://www.operabase.com/irina-lungu-a7420/de Instagram Irina Lungu About the Production Così fan tutte: A work that explores the nature of love and female fidelity. Two officers, Guglielmo and Ferrando, bet on the faithfulness of their fiancées, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, and decide to carry out a plan to test their true feelings, with the help of the maid Despina. Director Stefano Vizioli highlights the comedic aspect of Mozart’s masterpiece, while Milo Manara lends his renowned style to create movable decorative panels that frame the lovers’ partner-swapping story between Neapolitans and Ferrarans, envisioned by Mozart and Da Ponte. The aim is to evoke 18th-century frescoes found in Italian noble residences, with mythological scenes depicting Jupiter’s multiple loves, amorous chases, and playful interactions between satyrs and nymphs. Forty-five minutes before the curtain rises, an introductory talk on the opera will be held in the Teatro Ridotto as part of the “Beyond the Stage” series.
