GEORGE GAGNIDZE | KHOVANSHCHINA | BERLIN

On June 2, 2024, George Gagnidze will sing the role of Boyar Shaklovity in Khovanshchina at the Staatsoper Berlin in a new production by Claus Guth under the musical direction of Simone Young. He will share the stage with Mika Kares as Ivan Khovansky, Najmiddin Mavlyanov as Andrey Khovansky, Stephan Rügamer as Vassily Golitzyn, Taras Shtonda as Dosifey, and Marina Prudenskaya as Marfa. Additional performances will be on June 6, 9, 13, 16 and 23.

The Georgian baritone already sang the role of Shaklovity at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012 and at the BBC Proms in London in 2017, where Richard Fairman of  the Financial Times described him as a forceful Shaklovity in his rousing paean to his homeland Russia.”

George Gagnidze is a well-known name to the Staatsoper Berlin audience, having previously delivered outstanding performances as Scarpia in Tosca, Amonasro in Aida, and Grand-Prêtre de Dagon in Samson et Dalila. His powerful and nuanced performances have earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.
