On May 3, 2023, Irina Lungu returns to the Berlin State Opera as Violetta in La traviata, the first of a series of five performances running through May 20, 2023, in a production by Dieter Dorn and under the musical direction of Andrés Orozco-Estrada. She will sing alongside Freddie De Tommaso as Alfredo and Artur Ruciński as Germont.
Violetta is Irina Lungu’s most sung role, with over 150 performances under her belt in some of the most prestigious opera houses and festivals throughout the world, including the Teatro alla Scala (two different productions), the Opéra National de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Zurich Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, New National Theatre Tokyo, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Arena di Verona, Teatro Massimo Bellini Catania, Festival di Taormina. On the occasion of her Vienna State Opera debut in this role the Wiener Zeitung wrote: “(she) made the audience a compassionate participant in every moment of this character’s short life marked by love, jealousy, and sacrifice (we recall her intense rendition of the cabaletta ‘Sempre libera’).”
Irina Lungu is soon to be scheduled to add a new Verdi heroine to her already wide repertoire, Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra in Tokyo.
