On February 21 and 24, 2024, Irina Lungu will sing the role of Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro alla Scala, in a new production by Daniele Abbado and under the musical direction of Lorenzo Viotti. She will share the stage with Luca Salsi in the title role, Ain Anger as Jacopo Fiesco, Matteo Lippi as Gabriele Adorno, Roberto de Candia as Paolo Albiani, Andrea Pellegrini as Pietro, Haiyang Guo as Capitano dei balestrieri and Laura Lolita Perešivana as Un’ancella.
The Russian born soprano made her role debut as Amelia Grimaldi to wide acclaim just this past fall at the New National Theatre Tokyo.
Irina Lungu, who made her La Scala debut as Anaï in Moïse et Pharaon in the 200/2004 season, has graced that mythical stage in numerous roles such as Violetta in La traviata (two different productions), Maria Stuarda, Sancta Susanna, Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Oksana in Čerevički and Anaï in Moïse et Pharaon. She also did the unprecedented feat in the history of that legendary theater, to sing both Mimì and Musetta in La bohème in the same season. This coming April, still at La Scala, she will debut Nedda in Pagliacci.
