María José Siri in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in San Sebastian and Santander

On August 26 and 27, 2017 María José Siri will sing the soprano part of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at the Kursaal of San Sebastian and at the Festival Internacional Santander, respectively. The Orchestre Philarmonique du Luxembourg will be led by Maestro Gustavo Gimeno; mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona, tenor Antonio Poli and bass Renzo Zanellato will interpret the other soloist parts.

“I have already sung this sacred masterpiece about twenty-five times, the first one being at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and it is one of my favorite Verdi works”, says the Uruguayan soprano. “It is very demanding music: the a cappella “Agnus Dei” with the mezzo-soprano, the extremely wide palette of colors and nuances required by Verdi’s dynamics, not to mention the fact that the sound must frequently be angelic and dramatic in the very same set piece. Unlike what happens in opera, it is just myself in front of the audience; this is more challenging than performing an operatic character.”

In this past 2016/2017 season Maria José Siri already performed Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with three of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors: the Teatro alla Scala on tour to the Bolhsoj Theatre in Moscow under Riccardo Chailly, with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Marek Janowski, and with the Chorus and Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Myung-Whun Chung.
