On January 29, February 2, 4 and 6, Maria José Siri will bring her praised portrayal of Tosca to the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. The new production by Hugo de Ana will open the theatre’s 2022 season and will be conducted by Daniel Oren, with Roberto Aronica and Erwin Schrott / Claudio Sgura in the other main parts.
Maria José Siri made her role debut as Floria Tosca in 2010 at the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa and has since then performed it at many leading international stages, such as the Vienna State Opera, Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, New National Theatre Tokyo, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Teatro Regio Turin or the Teatro Massimo of Palermo.
“For me Tosca is a very young, very passionate woman”, says the soprano about the role of the Roman primadonna. “She is totally in love with Cavaradossi, and victim of the tragic events and of a man without any scruples. Tosca is also very religious, which makes the murder of Scarpia and her suicide even more tragic. Vocally, it is very important to find a balance between expression and beauty of tone, especially in the second act. One must be careful to not let oneself be carried away by veristic effects and not to loose control of the strong emotions.”
At the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Ms Siri made her house debut in 2010 as Leonora in Il trovatore and later returned making her role debuts as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera and Odabella in Attila as well as performing Elisabetta in Don Carlo.
