On May 26 and 28 Massimo Cavalletti will return to the Berlin Staatsoper im Schillertheater as Rodrigo di Posa in a Philipp Himmelmann production of Don Carlo conducted by Massimo Zanetti. Alongside him, Fabio Sartori (title role), Lianna Haroutounian (Elisabetta di Valois), René Pape (Filippo II), Marina Prudenskaya (Eboli), Mikhail Kazakov (Il Grande Inquisitore) and Jan Martinik (un frate) will perform in the principal roles.
“I’m so happy to return to the Berlin Staatsoper after my previous performances as Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra in 2012. Rodrigo is one of my favourite roles and I sang it the Zurich Opera in 2011, subsequently at the Teatro alla Scala in 2013 and just earlier this month I took part in a lavish Giancarlo Del Monaco production at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the musical direction of Zubin Mehta. Every time I sing this very complex role it gives me a chance to approach it with greater experience and maturity. As a role Rodrigo is for me the very incarnation of the symbol of liberty and freedom of thought.”
Massimo Cavalletti’s engagements following this Berlin Don Carlo include Riccardo in I puritani at the Savonlinna Festival, Ford in Falstaff with the Teatro alla Scala at the Astana Opera, the title role of Gianni Schicchi at the Dutch National Opera, his debut at the Paris Opera as the protagonist of Il barbiere di Siviglia and his return to the Metropolitan Opera as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor.
