June 01, 2019
On June 1, 2019 Riccardo Massi will return to the Dresden Semperoper as Cavaradossi in Tosca. Johannes Schaaf’s production will be conducted by Stefano Ranzani. Massi will appear in one further performance, on June 7, 2019. The title role will be sung by Angela Gheorghiu, and John Lundgren will sing Scarpia.
Massi continues to build his reputation as a top interpreter of the role of Cavaradossi. He comes to this production immediately after singing the role at the Washington National Opera in May 2019, giving performances for which critics lauded him as the “highlight of the evening” (Washington Classical Review), and praised not only his “smooth and powerful” voice (Washington Classical Review) but his ability to “make time stop by holding a note and riding the sound fed by his heart-felt humanity” (DC Theater Scene). He was last heard at the Semperoper singing Cavaradossi in this very production, by Johannes Schaaf, during the 2015/2016 season.
After this Tosca in Dresden, Massi will return to the Bavarian State Opera, singing Pollione in Norma at the Munich Opera Festival. Further future engagements include reprising Cavaradossi (Tosca) at the Dresden Semperoper, as well as singing Manrico (Il trovatore) and Cavaradossi at the Bavarian State Opera, and Zamoro (Alzira), at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liege next season.
