On February 28, 2022, Sonya Yoncheva will sing the role of Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos, in the premiere of a new production by David McVicar under the musical direction of Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the first of a series of eight performances running through March 26. She will share the stage with Matthew Polenzani in the title role, Eric Owens as Philippe II, Jamie Barton as Princess Eboli, Etienne Dupuis as Rodrigue de Posa and John Relyea as the Grand Inquisitor.
The Bulgarian soprano made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2013 as Gilda in Rigoletto, subsequently returning as Mimì in two runs of La bohème, Violetta in two series of La traviata, Desdemona in a new production of Otello which inaugurated the 2015/16 season and a revival in the 2018/19 season, a new production of Tosca, Luisa Miller, Yolanta, as well as a participation to 50 Years at Lincoln Center: a Gala Celebration. She also took part in the Met Stars Live in Concert series and has performed an acclaimed solo recital last month.
Sonya Yoncheva first performed the role of Élisabeth in the five act French version in a new production of Don Carlos at the Paris Opéra National in the 2017/18 season.
This production marks the first time the Metropolitan Opera stages Verdi’s masterpiece in its five act version in French. The March 26 performance will be broadcast Live in HD by many movie theaters all over the world.
