Sonya Yoncheva returns to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona with a role that has earned her accolades, the titular heroine of Madama Butterfly, in a production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier and under the musical direction of Paolo Bortolameolli. The premiere is on December 9, with additional performances on December 13, 16, 20, and 27. She will share the stage with Matthew Polenzani as Pinkerton, Lucas Meachem as Sharpless, and Annalisa Stroppa as Suzuki in the other leading roles.

The Bulgarian soprano made her role debut in 2023 at the Wiener Staatsoper, receiving rave reviews such as “
Yoncheva (…) has everything the role demands: lightness, power, impact, and tenderness” (Kurier), and reprised it earlier this year at the Staatsoper Berlin.

Sonya Yoncheva made her Liceu debut in 2022 with a rapturously greeted concert, followed by her highly acclaimed portrayal of Norma.
