On December 16, 2021, María José Siri will sing the role of Elisabetta di Valois at the Vienna State Opera in Daniele Abbado’s production of Don Carlo under the musical direction of Maestro Philippe Jordan, the first of a series of four performances running through December 25. She will share the stage with Fabio Sartori / Ramón Vargas in the title role, René Pape as Filippo II, Ekaterina Gubanova as Eboli, Boris Pinkhasovic as Rodrigo, and Ain Anger as Il Grande Inquisitore.
The Uruguayan soprano last appeared at the Vienna State Opera last month in another Verdi role, Abigaille in Nabucco, receiving praise for her “gigantic gifts and enormous expressiveness” (Kurier), “large caliber instrument” and “soulful piano phrases” (Die Presse).
She made her debut as Élisabeth de Valois in the original five act French version of Don Carlos at ABAO Bilbao in 2015, reprising the role in Italian at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia in 2017 and at the Teatro Comunale Bologna in 2018.
