On May 21, 2022, George Gagnidze will sing the role of Amonasro in Aida at the Los Angeles Opera, in a production by Francesca Zambello conducted by Maestro James Conlon, the first of a series of six performances running through June 12, 2022. He will share the stage with Latonia Moore in the title role, Melody Moore as Amneris, Russell Thomas as Radames and Morris Robinson as Ramfis.
The Georgian baritone made his Los Angeles Opera debut as Rigoletto in the 2010/11 season, returning as Tonio in Pagliacci in 2015. Additionally, he scored a personal triumph as Iago in Otello with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel in 2018.
Amonasro is one of his most performed roles, which he debuted in the 2012/13 season at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has sung it in 17 shows and where he will return in the same part in the 2022/23 season. Other important international stages George Gagnidze graced as Amonasro include the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Opéra National de Paris, the Teatro Real Madrid and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. In the 2016/17 season, he created this Francesca Zambello staging he will now reprise in Los Angeles at the San Francisco Opera.
