On December 2, 2022, George Gagnidze will sing the role of Amonasro in Aida at the Metropolitan Opera New York, in the celebrated Sonja Frisell production and under the musical direction of Maestro Paolo Carignani. He will share the stage with Latonia Moore in the title role, Brian Jagde as Radames, Olesya Petrova as Amneris and Christian Van Horn as Ramfis. There will be two additional performances on December 6 and 10, before he returns to New York to reprise his role next spring.

This is the final run of Sonja Frisell’s legendary production, which premiered in 1988 and was performed 200 times since then. George Gagnidze made his role debut as Amonasro in the production in 2012 and has perfomed the part in this production in several runs. He has also presented the role in other prestigious international opera house including the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Opéra national Paris, Staatsoper Berlin, Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Teatro Real Madrid.

Following his highly acclaimed debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Rigoletto in 2009, the Georgian baritone has sung over 100 performances in that theater, in roles ranging from Macbeth, Scarpia in Tosca and Michele in Il tabarro, to Šaklovityj (Chovanščina), Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana, Tonio in Pagliacci.
