On June 16, 2017, Irina Lungu will interpret the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, in a new production by Lorenzo Mariani conducted by Maestro Michele Mariotti, the first of a series of four performances running through June 22, 2017. Alongside her Stefano Pop will sing the role of Edgardo di Ravenswood, Markus Welba that of Enrico Asthon, and Evgeny Stavinsky will be Raimondo Bidedend.

“In Lucia di Lammermoor the soprano must be able to modulate her voice throughout a wide range”, says Irina Lungu. “Coloratura always has a deeply expressive meaning, so as to convey moods and feelings such as rage, fright, dismay, bewilderment, all the way to Lucia’s descent into insanity.” Finding the colors to express these emotions provide an “ever-fascinating musical dramatic journey” for the soprano.

Irina Lungu’s 2016/2017 season has been characterized by an impressive string of consecutive debuts in major bel canto roles: Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Elvira in I puritani, and the title role of Anna Bolena. While not debuting the part of the star-crossed Scottish young woman, the Russian soprano has tackled this most seminal of lyric coloratura soprano roles only once, at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona in 2014, and will reprise it in Oslo in February and March 2018.

Engagements this year after this Bologna Lucia will lead Irina Lungu to the Edinburgh Festival as Mimì in La bohème, to the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona as Corinna in Il viaggio a Reims (role debut), to the Vienna State Opera and to the Estaters Theater in Prague as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and to the New National Theatre Tokyo (house debut) as Violetta in La traviata.
