María José Siri to open the 2017/18 season of the Vienna State Opera as Leonora in Il trovatore

On September 4, 2017, María José Siri will inaugurate the 2017/18 season of the Vienna State Opera, replacing Anna Netrebko as Leonora in Il trovatore, in a production by Daniele Abbado conducted by Maestro Marco Armiliato. Alongside her, Yusif Eyvazov will sing the title role, Luciana D’Intino will interpret the role of Azucena, George Petean that of Conte di Luna and Jongmin Park will be Ferrando.

“I am happy about this unexpected return to the Vienna State Opera, a theatre I always enjoy singing at” states the Uruguayan soprano. “The role of Leonora in Il trovatore is particularly dear to me since it was my first important role in Europe, when I performed it at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa conducted by Maestro Bruno Bartoletti in 2008. It contains some of the most beautiful music that Giuseppe Verdi has ever written, for example Leonora’s stunning act IV aria “D’amor sull’ali rosee”. There wasn’t much time for me to rehearse, but I feel at ease thanks to the wonderful team at the Vienna State Opera, our conductor Marco Armiliato and my fantastic colleagues.”

In November María José Siri will be back at the Vienna State Opera to sing Cio-Cio-San in two performances of Madama Butterfly, a role that will also lead her to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Other engagements for the upcoming season after this Il trovatore in Vienna include Un ballo in maschera at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Messa per Rossini and a new production of Francesca da Rimini at the Teatro alla Scala, Don Carlo at the Palau de les Arts Valencia and the Teatro Comunale Bologna and a gala concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris.
