On August 12, 2018 Sonya Yoncheva will return to the Salzburg Festival in the title role of a new Jan Lauwers production of Claudio Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea conducted by William Christie, with a cast featuring Kate Lindsey, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Carlo Vistoli and Renato Dolcini.
Sonya returns to Salzburg following her acclaimed festival debut in 2017 in a solo concert.
The Bulgarian star soprano began her career as a Baroque singer and is an alumna of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix. Past engagements have featured her in several iconic Baroque roles, including Phani/Zima (Les Indes galantes) and Dido (Dido and Aeneas) on tour with William Christie in Europe, Russia and the US; La Fortuna (L’incoronazione di Poppea); Giunone (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria); Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare); and Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea) with conductor Emmanuelle Haim.
Recently she made her debuts in the title roles of Norma (Royal Opera House Covent Garden), Tosca and Luisa Miller (Metropolitan Oper New York), as Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos (Paris Opera) and Imogene in Il pirata (Teatro alla Scala).
