SONYA YONCHEVA OPENS TEATRO ALLA SCALA SEASON

On December 7, 2020, Sonya Yoncheva will take part in “A riveder le stelle”, the inauguration gala of the 2020/2021 Teatro alla Scala season, an operatic and ballet soirée directed by Davide Livermore and conducted by Riccardo Chailly (and Michele Gamba for the ballet). She will share the stage with some of the most renowned international opera singers such as Ildar Abdrazakov, Roberto Alagna, Carlos Álvarez, Piotr Beczala, Benjamin Bernheim, Eleonora Buratto, Marianne Crebassa, Plácido Domingo, Rosa Feola, Juan Diego Flórez, Elīna Garanča, Vittorio Grigolo, Aleksandra Kurzak, Francesco Meli, Camilla Nylund, Kristine Opolais, Lisette Oropesa, Mirco Palazzi, George Petean, Marina Rebeka, Luca Salsi, Andreas Schager, Ludovic Tézier; and ballet dancers Roberto Bolle, Nicoletta Manni, Martina Arduino, Virna Toppi, Timofej Andrijashenko, Claudio Coviello, Marco Agostino, Nicola Del Freo.

Sonya Yoncheva, who on this occasion will sing the popular aria “La mamma morta” from Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, made her scenic Teatro alla Scala debut in the 2016/2017 season as Mimì in La bohème, returning one year later as Imogene in a new production of Il pirata and in 2019 for a Rolex Ambassadors Gala with the Wiener Philarmoniker conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and Plácido Domingo. However, she had first graced the Scala stage in a concert performance of Rameau’s Les Indes galantes in 2008 and as the winner of Plácido Domingo Operalia Competition in 2010. This past summer, the Bulgarian soprano was scheduled to star as the protagonist of a new production of Fedora, an event canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sonya Yoncheva’s upcoming engagements include “Weihnachten mit dem Bundespräsidenten”, a Christmas concert in Bernau hosted by the German President and telecast on ZDF, Tosca at the Vienna State Opera, a recital at the Bad Schussenried monastery within the Met Stars Live in Concert series, her recital “Ad una Stella” at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, a Zarzuela Concert at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and a concert Amours et Tragédies at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées of Paris, Violetta in La traviata and her role debut as Aida at the Arena of Verona, her role debut as Stephana in Siberia at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, concerts at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Munich Opera Festival, and Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos as well as a recital at the Metropolitan Opera New York.
