On January 12, 2018 Tamara Gura makes her role debut as Adalgisa in Norma at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, in a Gabriele Rech production conducted by Daniela Musca. She will sing alongside Adina Aaron in the title role, Richard Furman as Pollione and Young Doo Park as Oroveso. It is the first of a series of six performances running through March 4, 2018.

“I am very excited to debut my first big role in the Bellini and Donizetti repertoire. Bellini’s music for Adalgisa is wonderful to sing as it really shows a sensual sound for the middle register and stretches both low and high.” states the American mezzo-soprano. “The story of Norma is wonderful dramatic and I have had a really great time exploring the character of the young novice. She has an enormous conflict: deciding between the sacred vows and the temptation of the flesh with Pollione. She must face herself and the audience can see her struggle to make this choice. Then she must have enough courage to tell Norma of her broken vows. This confession goes much better than she had thought, but it leads to a discovery of betrayal beyond anything anyone could have imagined. The acting part of Adalgisa is really something you can research deeply as an actor, particularly the experience of going to the woods to face yourself and finding a silent place to finally confess the feelings you have been having to hide. The Norma and the Pollione in this production are both great singing actors and we are having an intense rehearsal process.”

Adalgisa is not her first foray into bel-canto, as Tamara Gura has already performed to wide acclaim some of the genre’s great parts such as the protagonists of L’italiana in Algeri and La cenerentola.

In addition to this Wiesbaden Norma, Tamara Gura’s 2017/2018 season engagements include Nicklausse in Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Salisburg Landestheater, a gala concert in Seoul, the title role of La cenerentola at the Festival of the Aegean in Syros, Greece, and Smeraldine in L’amour des trois oranges at the Teatro San Carlo Naples.
