VLADIMIR STOYANOV TO MAKE HIS DEBUT AS CARLO GÉRARD IN ANDREA CHÉNIER IN LAJATICO

On July 28, 2018, Vladimir Stoyanov will debut the role of Carlo Gérard in Andrea Chénier at the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, the personal open-air theatre of Andrea Bocelli, who himself will add the title role to his repertoire, in a production by Stefano Trespidi and under the musical direction of Maestro Steven Mercurio. Andrea Bocelli and Vladimir Stoyanov will be joined by Sabina Cvilak as Maddalena di Coigny, with a repeat performance on July 30, 2018.

Despite an over twenty year old career that has led him to the most important opera companies and festival around the world as one of the most prominent Verdi baritones, Carlo Gérard is the Bulgarian baritone’s very first Verismo role. “I have always been very cautious in my choices: for instance, I waited until I was 40 before tackling Rigoletto, which is now one of the roles I sing more often. Of course I’ve been often asked to sing staples such as Scarpia and Tonio, but for the time being I believe Chénier will remain my only Verismo opera. The secret for me is to approach different operatic styles while always maintaining a “bel-canto” technique: the vocal system should be kept as more harmonious as possible and this implies singing the same roles for a long period of time, and I have no intention at the moment to put aside Verdi, the core of my repertoire.”

When asked about the unusual setting for his role debut, a gorgeous open-air theatre in the middle of the most typical Tuscan countryside, Vladimir Stoyanov has nothing but the highest praise for Andrea Bocelli, who, with his enormous popularity has contributed to the diffusion of opera in the world, also remarking how many high-profile colleagues and conductors have collaborated with the superstar in his own Teatro del Silenzio.

After this Andrea Chénier, already announced engagements for Vladimir Stoyanov’s 2018/2019 season include Ezio in a new production of Attila at the Festival Verdi / Teatro Regio Parma, his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Prince Yeletsky in Pikovaja Dama and the title role of Rigoletto at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia Valencia
