Just days after his appearances as Rodrigo di Posa in Don Carlo, Etienne Dupuis returns to the Wiener Staatsoper as the ultimate operatic “Don”, the protagonist of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, in a Barrie Kosky production under the musical direction of Philippe Jordan, sharing the stage with Peter Kellner as Leporello, Anna Louise Alder as Donna Anna, Emily D’Angelo as Donna Elvira, Edgardo Rocha as Don Ottavio, Isabel Signoret as Zerlina, Ilja Kazakov as Masetto, and Ante Jerkunica as the Commendatore.
The premiere is on March 28, with an additional performance on April 1.
The Canadian baritone made his Wiener Staatsoper debut as Valentin in Faust in 2021. He then returned as Figaro in a new production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Marcello in La bohème, Albert in Werther, the title role in Eugene Onegin, and Rodrigo di Posa in Don Carlo. His portrayal of Mozart’s libertine antihero has been celebrated worldwide, including at the Paris Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Dallas Opera.

The legendary womanizer Don Giovanni ruthlessly and relentlessly conquers the hearts of women. However, his misdeeds do not go unpunished when he challenges and kills the Commendatore.
As Don Giovanni tries to escape his pursuers and hide his actions, the situation becomes perilous. In the end, he is held accountable by a supernatural power and dragged to hell, while everyone else reflects on the transience of power and the justice of fate. The opera is a gripping portrayal of love, seduction, revenge, and moral responsibility.
