This evening, Gabriela Scherer appears at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for a special one-off performance as Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, in Christian Spuck’s production conducted by Sir Donald Runnicles. She is joined by James Rutherford in the title role, alongside Kieran Carrel (Erik), Tobias Kehrer (Daland), Stephanie Wake-Edwards (Mary), and Andrei Danilov (the Helmsman). The Swiss soprano has become a standout Senta on the international circuit and returns to a role she sang to great success in this same production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin last March. The soprano, who has received multiple awards, further refined her training at the Zurich Opera Studio and in various masterclasses with, among others, Angelika Kirchschlager, Francisco Araiza, and Barbara Fink. Before becoming a member of the Bavarian State Opera ensemble from 2009 to 2011, she was part of the Leipzig Opera ensemble for one season until 2008. Since her successful transition to the youthful-dramatic repertoire in 2011, Gabriela Scherer has performed a wide range of major roles: the title roles in R. Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Arabella, Tosca (Puccini), Iphigenie auf Tauris (Gluck), as well as Contessa di Almaviva (Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro), Agathe (Weber’s Der Freischütz), and Elisabetta (Verdi’s Don Carlos). Furthermore, she has appeared in Wagner roles such as Freia (Das Rheingold), Gerhilde (Die Walküre), Eva (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and Senta (Der fliegende Holländer). In the 2020/21 season, she made role debuts as Elsa (Wagner’s Lohengrin) at Leipzig Opera and Lady Macbeth (Verdi’s Macbeth) at the Hessian State Theatre Wiesbaden. In 2023, she performed Maddalena di Coigny (Giordano’s Andrea Chénier) at the Theater St. Gallen. Her engagements have taken her to the Opéra National de Paris, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lucerne Theatre, Dortmund Theatre, and the Heidenheim Opera Festival. In 2024, she will make her role debut as Chrysothemis (R. Strauss’s Elektra) at the Semperoper Dresden and also appear as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, as Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Bavarian State Opera, and as Gutrune in Wagner’s Götterdämmerung at the Bayreuth Festival. Ravel / Bartók / Martin: On January 15, 2026, Pietari Inkinen opens the new year with a concert with the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares in Palma de Mallorca. The program brings together three contrasting masterpieces: Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, a delicately colored and fairy-tale-like suite of five children’s pieces; Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic and rhythmically charged showcase for the entire ensemble; and Frank Martin’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, an introspective and finely wrought work of lyrical intensity. As a teenager, the Finnish conductor, born in 1980, began studying the violin at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he also attended Jorma Panula's conducting class. Further studies took him to Zakhar Bron at the Cologne University of Music and back to Helsinki to Leif Segerstam. From 2008 to 2016, he was the chief conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and in 2014 and 2015, he spent five years each as chief conductor of the Ludwigsburg Festival and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. A special place in the conductor's career is held by the music of Richard Wagner: in 2014, he conducted Der Ring des Nibelungen for the first time at Opera Australia in Melbourne, and in 2021, he conducted Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival. There, he conducted the complete Tetralogy in 2023. Pietari Inkinen is in demand worldwide at opera houses from Helsinki to Brussels, Dresden, and Berlin, and has also worked with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Pietari Inkinen makes his debut with the Utah Symphony on December 12 and 13 at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. The program features Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza, a brief and explosive opener, Beethoven’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 3 with soloist Shai Wosner, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, one of the composer’s most potent and darkly lyrical works.
