SONYA YONCHEVA | ANDREA CHÉNIER | TEATRO ALLA SCALA

On May 3, after her triumphant Fedora last fall, Sonya Yoncheva chooses once again the Teatro alla Scala for another Umberto Giordano role debut, Maddalena di Coigny in Andrea Chénier, the first of a series of five performances running through May 27, 2023, in a production by Mario Martone and under the musical direction of Marco Armiliato. She will share the stage with Yuzif Eyvazov alternating with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, Ambrogio Maestri /  Amartuvshin Enkhbat as Carlo Gérard, Francesca Di Sauro as Bersi, Elena Zilio as Madelon, Ruben Amoretti as Roucher and Carlo Bosi as L’Incredibile.

In addition to the above-mentioned Fedora (“The warmest applause went to Sonya Yoncheva, who conveyed Fedora’s inner turmoil with no expressive heaviness and with a constantly flawless voice”, wrote La Repubblica), the Bulgarian soprano has championed another Giordano rarely heard gem, Siberia.
At the Teatro alla Scala, Sonya Yoncheva has also appeared as Mimì in La bohème, Imogene in Il Pirata as well as in several concerts, including “A riveder le stelle”, which inaugurated the 2020/21 season of the prestigious Milanese opera house.
