GEORGE GAGNIDZE | TOSCA | BARCELONA

In January 2023, George Gagnidze will return to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, reprising his signature role of Scarpia in Tosca in a new production by Rafael R. Villalobos and under the musical direction of Giacomo Sagripanti alternating with Henrik Nánási. The series of six performances will run through January 21, which will mark George Gagnidze’s 100th performance as Scarpia. He will sing alongside Maria Agresta alternating with Monica Zavattin and Emily Magee in the title role, and Michael Fabiano and Antonio Corianò as Cavaradossi.

The Georgian baritone, who has already appeared at the Liceu as Germont in La traviata, Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana and Tonio in Pagliacci, has recently interpreted Scarpia in the Metropolitan Opera’s 1000th performance of Puccini’s masterpiece in October 2022. At the Met alone, he has sung the role over 40 times in two different stagings. Other theatres he has performed it include the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as the Wiener Staatsoper.
