On October 19, 2022, George Gagnidze will sing the role of Scarpia in Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera, in a production by David McVicar and under the musical direction of Maestro Carlo Rizzi, the first of a series of five performances running through November 4, 2022. He will sing alongside Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role and Michael Fabiano and Roberto Alagna alternating as Cavaradossi.
The performance on October 27 will mark the 1.000th time Tosca is being played at the Metropolitan Opera. On October 31, George Gagnidze will sing his 40th performance as Scarpia at the MET alone.
The Georgian baritone has interpreted Puccini’s evil Baron to constant high acclaim in virtually all the most prestigious international opera houses such as the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro San Carlo Naples, the Berlin State Opera, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He will also sing it later this season at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
