On October 8, 2017, Maria José Siri will return to the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in a production by Vincent Boussard under the baton of Renato Palumbo, the first of a series of seven performances running through October 29, 2017. Alongside her, Fabio Sartori will sing the role of Riccardo, Giovanni Meoni that of Renato, Patricia Bardon will interpret Ulrica and Katerina Tretyakova Oscar.
This is the third outing of Maria José Siri as Amelia, who has previously sung the role at the Teatro Comunale Bologna and at the Monnaie Brussels. “Amelia captivates me very much”, states the Uruguayan soprano. “She has the same elegance as Leonora in Il trovatore, with the pathos of Desdemona. Compared to the others characters in the opera, she never changes. Since the moment she arrives at Ulrica’s place, with anguish and pain in her voice, all the way through the final ensemble Amelia always stays the same: a sweet, honest, loyal woman, so anchored in real life. And that touches me very much. Moreover, she is a mother, and I find both subtle and interesting the way Verdi introduces this side of hers, in her Act III “Prayer”. This gains a very particular color.”
Maria José Siri’s 2017/2018 season began last month with her participation as Leonora in Il trovatore inaugurating the Vienna State Opera’s current season. After this Ballo in maschera in Barcelona, she will be back at the Vienna State Opera to sing Cio-Cio-San in two performances of Madama Butterfly, a role that will also lead her to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Other upcoming engagements include Messa per Rossini and a new production of Francesca da Rimini at the Teatro alla Scala, Don Carlo at the Palau de les Arts Valencia and the Teatro Comunale Bologna and a gala concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris.
