MARK S. DOSS | FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD | ROME

Mark S. Doss makes his role debut as Alexandr Petrovič Gorjančikov, the main character in Leoš Janáček’s Z mrtvého domu (From the House of the Dead), at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma on May 21, 2023, in a new production by Krzysztof Warlikowski and under the musical direction of Dmitry Matvienko. He will share the stage with Pascal Charbonneau as Aljeja, Štefan Margita as Filka Morozov, Julian Hubbard as Skuratov, Leigh Melrose as Šiškov among others. The last of the six performances will be on May 30.
Mark S. Doss has previously sung at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma as Cadmus in a new production of Hans Werner Henze’s The Bassarids in 2015. The American bass-baritone is the very essence of vocal versatility, with a repertoire of 100 operas ranging from basso profondo to true baritone roles. His versatility also extends to the high number of languages he performs in: Gorjančikov is not the first Czech role in his repertoire, having also sung Prince Vasilij Šujský in Antonín Dvořák’s Dimitrij.
The American bass-baritone’s next Italian engagement is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in St. Mark’s Square in Venice as part of the season of the Teatro La Fenice in July.
