MARK S. DOSS | THE TIME OF OUR SINGING | ST. GALLEN

On March 19, 2023, Mark S. Doss reprises his celebrated portrayal of William Daley in The Time of Our Singing, the powerful contemporary opera by the Belgian composer Kris Defoort that premiered at La Monnaie in Brussels in September 2021, in this very same Ted Huffmann production conducted by Kwamé Ryan. He will share the stage with Claron McFadden as Delia Daley, Kristján Jóhannesson as David Strom, Joshua Stewart as Jonah, Markel Reed as Joey, Naomi Simmonds as Ruth, and Jennifer Panara as Lisette Soer. There will be four additional performances through March 23, 2023.

Mark S. Doss created the role of William Daley in this work that depicts the life of a mixed-race family that is both united and divided by music, against the backdrop of segregation in the post-war United States. The Ohio-born bass-baritone gave a compelling portrayal of an African-American father who sees his daughter’s marriage to a white man as a betrayal of her ancestry.

After this Swiss engagement, the Grammy winner singer travels to New York City’s Lincoln Center to star – together with orchestra members of the New York Philharmonic – in “Here I Stand”, a musical homage to the legendary Black bass-baritone Paul Robeson on the 125th anniversary of his birth.
